UPSC Announces 349 CAPF Assistant Commandant Posts for 2026 Examination Cycle
Some of you have been waiting for this notification without saying it out loud. The Union Public Service Commission has finally released the Central Armed Police Forces Assistant Commandant examination notice for 2026, and if you’ve been tracking serious uniformed service entries, you already know this one carries weight.
UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant Recruitment 2026 is a national-level competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit 349 officers into India’s Central Armed Police Forces.
The application window opened on 20 February 2026 and will remain active until 12 March 2026. That is not a long window. People often delay thinking they have time. They don’t. The fee payment deadline is the same day, 12 March 2026, so the form and payment must both be completed before that.
Now let’s pause on age, because this is where many aspirants quietly exit.
As on 01 August 2026, you must be at least 20 years old and not more than 25 years old. Age relaxation applies as per UPSC rules, but if you are already close to the upper limit, this attempt becomes strategically important. You don’t get unlimited chances here. Unlike some other examinations, the age band is tight.
The total number of vacancies announced is 349. They are distributed across different forces:
BSF – 108 posts
CRPF – 106 posts
CISF – 70 posts
ITBP – 12 posts
SSB – 53 posts
The distribution matters because each force has a slightly different operational character. Border guarding, internal security, industrial security, high-altitude deployment — these are not desk postings. You are entering a field-oriented command role from day one.
Eligibility on paper looks simple. A Bachelor’s degree in any stream from a recognized university in India. That’s it academically. No percentage barrier mentioned here. But don’t misread that simplicity. Graduation is just the entry ticket. The real filtration happens later.
Physical standards are non-negotiable. For male candidates, minimum height is 165 cm; for female candidates, 157 cm. Chest measurement for males must be 81–86 cm. There is no chest requirement for females.
Then comes the physical efficiency test. And this is where many well-prepared written candidates struggle.
100-meter race: 16 seconds for males, 18 seconds for females.
800-meter race: 3 minutes 45 seconds for males, 4 minutes 45 seconds for females.
Long jump: 3.5 meters for males (three chances), 3 meters for females (three chances).
Shot put (7.26 kg): 4.5 meters for males.
These are not elite athletic standards. But they are not casual either. If you have not been training consistently, the body will expose you. And remember, this comes after clearing the written stage. Rejection at PET stage after months of preparation is psychologically hard.
The selection process moves in four stages: written examination, physical efficiency test, interview, and final merit list.
Let’s talk realistically about that written exam.
This is conducted by UPSC. That means question quality, unpredictability, and conceptual depth. It is not a memory-based exam. It demands understanding, clarity in fundamentals, and disciplined writing ability. Many aspirants preparing for other UPSC examinations consider this as parallel preparation, but the pattern and demand are different. Underestimating this exam is a mistake.
After the written exam, only those who qualify move to the physical stage. Then comes the interview. And interviews here are not superficial. They evaluate temperament, decision-making ability, situational awareness, and psychological steadiness. You are being assessed as a future officer responsible for personnel and operations.
Application fee is ₹200 for General and OBC candidates. SC, ST, PH, and all female candidates are exempted from fee payment. Payment can be made through debit card, credit card, internet banking, IMPS, cash card, or mobile wallet. The process is entirely online.
The examination date has not yet been announced. Admit cards will be issued before the exam, and result dates will be updated later. You will need to track the official exam result page regularly instead of depending only on third-party portals.
Now about the nature of the job itself.
Assistant Commandant is not an entry-level clerical post. It is a Group A officer-level position. The role involves leadership, operational command, field postings, transfers across regions, and exposure to demanding terrains. Expect movement. Expect responsibility early. If someone is looking for predictable urban stability, this path may feel disruptive.
But for those who want uniformed command responsibility and structured career progression, it offers long-term stability under central government service. Promotions, deputations, and inter-force exposure over time can shape a serious career trajectory.
Still, it is not for everyone.
Candidates who are academically strong but physically unprepared often struggle midway. Candidates who dislike uncertainty or transferable jobs may feel stressed. On the other hand, disciplined graduates who are willing to build physical endurance alongside written preparation stand a stronger chance.
Competition will be intense. 349 posts nationally means thousands of applicants. Many serious aspirants treat this as one of the most respected new government job openings in the uniformed services category.
And yet, something worth thinking about.
Some candidates prepare for years without clarity about whether they truly want field command roles. Others apply simply because it is a government opportunity. That approach rarely sustains through training and service life. This recruitment demands intent, not just qualification.
If you are within the age band and physically capable, this attempt deserves structured preparation. If you are unsure about the service lifestyle, reflect before applying. There is always career flexibility outside govt jobs, but entry into forces like these is not something you casually step out of once you commit.
The application process itself is straightforward. Visit the official UPSC website, complete the online registration, upload required documents, pay the applicable fee, and submit before 12 March 2026. Always read the full notification carefully before filling the form. Age calculation errors and documentation mistakes are common reasons for rejection.

In the end, this examination is less about clearing a form and more about understanding what kind of responsibility you are stepping toward. The written exam will test your mind. The physical stage will test your discipline. The interview will test your judgment.
Some will clear it this year. Most will not. That is the nature of serious competitive examinations.
And if you are preparing, start with clarity. Not urgency. Not panic.
Just clarity.
