The High Altitude Regional Centre at Solan, Himachal Pradesh has been established in September 1968, under the fourth Five Year Plan of the Government of India, with the main objective of exploring the Himalayan fauna. The jurisdiction of the centre includes the mountainous states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir of the North Western Himalaya. They are located between 300 22’40’’N - 3706’ N latitude and between 720 30’ 20’’E - 790 04’ 20’’ E longitudes and spread over an area of 2, 77, 909 sq.km. Owing to vast altitudinal variation from 600m to 6,500m asl, it covers all the four physiographical zones of the Himalaya viz. Shiwalik, Lesser, Great and Trans Himalaya. Three important ranges, Karakoram Range is the northern most range, to the south of the Karakoram ranges run the Zanksar range and parallel to Zanksar ranges lie the Pir Panjal ranges in the region. The high altitude areas with wide-ranging physiographic and biogeographic features harbour a rich faunal wealth in the region. The cold deserts are high altitude areas with very low rainfall. These are extremely fragile ecosystem.
