The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), established by an Act of Parliament in 1985, has continuously striven to build an inclusive knowledge society through inclusive education. It has tried to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by offering high-quality teaching through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

The University began by offering two academic programmes in 1987, i.e., Diploma in Management and Diploma in Distance Education, with a strength of 4,528 students.

IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is a national distance learning university located in New Delhi, India. IGNOU offers admission to M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) programs for the July session. It offers seats in 12 different disciplines of Ph.D. program and 2 streams of M.Phil. Program. The number of seats available in each program is different.

The M.Phil./ Ph.D. programs involve coursework during the first six months of admission, which will be conducted in Campus at New Delhi only. Candidates who wish to apply can submit the application form on the official website of the university. Students have to pay an application fee of INR 1000 at the time of registration process. To seek admission to M.Phil. and Ph.D. program, candidates must qualify the complete eligibility criteria mentioned below:

Eligibility for M.Phil.

  • Candidates must have master’s degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized university by UGC.
  • The minimum marks required to be eligible for admission to M.Phil. and Ph.D. program is 55%.
  • There is a relaxation of 5% marks for reserved category candidates (SC/ ST/ OBC).

Application Form

Candidates are required to apply through online mode only. No hard copy of the application form will be accepted. Students are advised to check eligibility criteria before applying for the program. Applications received after the due date will not be accepted.

Applicants have to pay an application fee of INR 1000 at the time of registration process. It can be paid in offline mode through demand draft of INR 1000 in favor of IGNOU payable at New Delhi.

Students are required to make sure that all the information which is mentioned in the application form must be correct and similar to the information of original documents.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Go to official website i.e. www.ignou.ac.in.
  2. Click on the admission link
  3. Register by using your email id and password
  4. Login after the confirmation of email
  5. Enter the details asked in the application form
  6. Upload the signature and photograph in jpeg format
  7. Image size should not be more than 50 kb
  8. Save the application form
  9. Pay the application fee by Credit/ Debit Card/ Net-banking or ATM card (PNB)
  10. Take the print out of application form for future reference

Admission Process

The selection is done on the basis of written test followed by interview. Applications found suitable for admission will be called for the entrance test. Shortlisted candidates on the basis of their performance in the written test will be called for interview round. Offer letters for admission will be sent to the Selected Candidates only.

Candidates holding M.Phil. Degree (along with course work and dissertation both) or those candidates who have cleared NET (conducted by UGC/ CSIR/ ICAR) or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing in the Entrance Test.

Entrance Test

  • The list of shortlisted candidates who will be required to appear for the Entrance Test will be displayed on IGNOU website.
  • The admit card will also be released on the official website of IGNOU one week prior of exam date.
  • Candidates must bring their admit card to the exam center, else they will not allow to sit for the written test.
  • Applicants have to bring an original identity proof having photograph, such as Aadhar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, Passport and ID card at the examination center.
  • Students must score minimum 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify the exam.

Interview/ Presentation

  • Qualified candidates in the written test will be called for interview round/ Presentation.
  • Candidates who are exempted from written test will also be called for interview round.
  • The Entrance test will be held on 13 cities. The table below represents the test center with their code.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU 2019) offers admission through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
