The ICAR-National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (ICAR-NIANP) was established on 24th November 1995 at Bangalore under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. The Institute is mandated to conduct basic and fundamental research with respect to animal feed resource management using physiological-nutritional approaches to improve animal productivity and profitability of livestock farmers.
The institute's new campus was inaugurated by the Honourable Union Minister for Agriculture, Shri Rajnath Singhji on 13th August 2003.
While such words of recognition do encourage us, I would reiterate that we would certainly not by-pass our increased responsibilities. In the wake of many ground realities and situations such as shortage of animal feed, increasing cost of feed ingredients, need to improve feed utilization, need to improve digestibility, improve productive efficiency of animals, consumers giving more importance to safety, quality and specificity of products, ethical and environmental considerations, growing demand for livestock products etc. put lot of onus on us to cater to diverse needs of finding solutions towards continuous increase in livestock economy, increase economic prospects of stakeholders, that is both animal husbandry practioners and livestock industry, enable the decision/policy makers to understand, direct and support continued positive impacts and growth in animal nutrition and physiology as well as guide the next generation of researchers. At the same time, we can take solace that all these open up a vast array of opportunities, new vistas and setting new priorities and objectives to undertake studies in terms of quantitative and qualitative animal production.
