The GCRI (Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute), established in the year 1972, is a functional autonomous body jointly managed by Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Cancer Society. It is also a Regional Cancer Centre of Government of India and getting assistance under National Cancer Control Programme. GCRI is a unique example of cooperation between State Government, Central Government and Non-Government Organization.
Today, the GCRI is a largest cancer hospital of the country with union of best oncologists’ team with world class facilities for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The institute has three huge buildings which were intended to provide best and high standard health services and nursing care in all branches of oncology. This 650 bedded cancer hospital has taken excellent care of 25,905 new cases, 2,73,667 outdoor patients, 20,855 indoor admissions in 2011. For the patient care, the institute has total strength of 940 permanent employees in categories of class I, II and III officers (nursing), class IV employees and 110 resident doctors.
GCRI is one of the finest cancer care centres with specialties in surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, preventive oncology, pediatric oncology, neuro- oncology, gynec-oncology, radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine, pathology and microbiology, laboratory medicine. The institute also provides other allied services like home hospice care, physiotherapy, stoma clinic, speech therapy, prosthesis and rehabilitation, cancer health checkup, alternative medicine clinic. GCRI is equipped with the latest diagnostic and interventional equipment to achieve good quality patient care. The institute has ultra-modern operation theatres equipped with ultra modern gadgets required for all the types major and minor surgeries for cancer patients. The institute also has a bone marrow transplantation unit, endoscopy unit with flexible fibre-optic video endoscopes, colposcopes, spiral CT scan, PET scan, linear accelerators, a Brachy- therapy unit, High dose and Micro selectrons and a Mammograph machine. Radiotherapy department of GCRI is fully equipped with three 6MV electa linear accelerators, one varian 6MV linear accelerator, one cobalt machine, with facilities for three dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT), intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRC), one contact therpy machine, one low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy unit, three microselectron high dose rate (HDR) brachytherpy unit, two electa simulator machines, one Siemens CT simulator machine. In addition, the institute has latest technologies in laboratory for cancer diagnosis and management. The institute diagnostic labs are accredited by NABL that ensures quality diagnosis. In 2011, the institute has performed 14,62,598 Laboratory tests, 1,09,739 Histological examinations, 92,849 Imaging & Radiological investigations, 19,673 Major and Minor surgeries, 41,985 Chemotherapy Treatment, 18,947 Radiation Treatment.
