Name of the examination: Joint Entrance Examination (IIT)

Purpose Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is common to all six Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras), Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and the Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi. Admissions to the first year of the undergraduate programme leading to the degrees of B.Tech., Five- year Dual Degree Programmes and 5- year Integrated M.Tech. and M.Sc. Programmes is through the Joint Entrance Examination.

These institutes offer 77 courses. On successfully completing the Main Examination of the JEE, the candidate may opt for any of these courses, depending upon his/her  All India ranking.

 Examination pattern JEE consists of a Screening Test and the Main Examination.

Screening Test - This test is scheduled for the first Sunday of January every year. The paper is of three- hour duration and is on mathematics, physics and chemistry. Successful candidates then appear for the Main Paper.

Main Paper - This examination is scheduled for the first Sunday of May every year. It consists of three papers in mathematics, physics and chemistry, with duration of two hours each.

Brochures and application forms The Information Brochure provided with the application material contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus for JEE, courses of study available at various institutions and other relevant information about JEE.

The Information Brochure also lists the JEE examination centers in the country. Once allotted, examination centres cannot be changed and requests for the same are normally not entertained. However, a change of centre is permitted under exceptional circumstances provided the application for the same is received well in advance. A draft for Rs. 300/- for each examination in favour of JEE- 2001 of the respective IIT must also be sent along with the application.

Eligibility The minimum academic qualification is successful completion of Standard XII under the 10+2 system or its equivalent. In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public / board exam at an earlier level.

Those who are appearing for the Standard XII final exams may also appear in JEE. When such candidates successfully clear the JEE, they are given provisional admissions. The provisional admission is cancelled in case the candidate fails to provide proof of having passed the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent) to the concerned Institute on or before September 30 of the year of the exam.

All admissions are subject to verification of facts from the original certificates / documents of the candidate. If the candidate is found to be ineligible at a later date, even after being admitted to an Institute, his/her admission can be cancelled. The Joint Admission Board's decision regarding the eligibility of a candidate is final.

Candidates seeking admission for B.Arch (5 years) and B. Des. (4 years) must clear the Architecture and Design Aptitude Test to be held in June 2003

Age limit: 25 - 30 years. Relaxable in case of SC/STs

Physical Fitness The candidate must not suffer from any organic defect. The candidate must have a good physique and stamina to bear the arduous demands of the engineering profession. The physically handicapped are required to submit a certificate from a recognized medical practitioner to this effect at the time of admission.

Reservation 15% and 7.5 % seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates, respectively. However, these candidates must qualify in the JEE with certain specified but relaxed (as compared to the general category) qualifying norms. If all seats in the reserved category are not filled, candidates failing to qualify but satisfying certain other norms are eligible for a one- year preparatory course. This prepares them in physics, chemistry and mathematics. On completion of this course, the candidate is offered direct admission to the undergraduate programmes in July of the next year.

SC and ST candidates must produce an original caste certificate issued by a competent authority at the time of counseling, failing which they are not considered for admission. Candidates belonging to any other category do not fill seats remaining vacant in the reserved category.

Admission Notices Admission notices are published in national dailies. Once the notices are published, application forms and information brochures containing syllabi and other instructions can be procured from the Institutes.

Language for Answering JEE Question papers for JEE are in two languages - English and Hindi. Candidates are allowed to answer in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The medium of instruction in all Institutes is English.

All  India  Ranking  (AIR) separate mark lists (All India Ranks) are prepared for candidates belonging to different categories such as General (GE including DS and PH), SC and ST. There are independent cut- offs for each subject and also for the aggregate.

The JEE answer books are graded meticulously and are repeatedly checked, and hence, there is no provision for re- grading of answer- books. Also, there is no provision for the declaration of marks in respect to any candidate. No correspondence in this regard is entertained.
