Jharkhand Police is the law enforcement agency for the state of Jharkhand, India. Jharkhand Police was formed in 2000, after the establishment of Jharkhand state. Jharkhand is among the top Indian states for total recruitment.Jharkhand might not be known as a progressive state, but it has definitely been setting an example as far as increasing the strength of its police force is concerned. At a time when there is an intense focus on the inadequate numbers in the various state police departments — making them ill-equipped to tackle the challenges of terrorism and Naxalism — Jharkhand has added an impressive number of personnel to its police force. From 33,119 police personnel in 2001, Jharkhand had increased its police strength to 51,081 as on January 1, 2007 — a jump of more than 54 per cent, when the national average during the same period was over 12 per cent.
Jharkhand's good performance in this regard has been matched by Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand — the two states that were created with it in 2000. Chhattisgarh increased its state police force by 48 per cent in the seven years from 2000 to 2007 while Uttarakhand strengthened its forces by 65 per cent. The only state that has done better than these three is Nagaland which has almost doubled its police strength during the same time
