About Indira Gandhi National Tribal University

The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak has been established by an Act of the Parliament of India. It came into existence by the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007 and came into action on July 2008. The jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole country and it is fully funded by the Central Government through the University Grant Commission. The university caters to the tribals’ long cherished dream of higher education.

The tribal people are rich in cultural heritage and skill of art and craft but they are still marginalized in respect to higher education as well as in other walks of life. Now in the present age of globalization the world has shrunk into a village as the society has advanced in technology. But the tribes, who are the custodians of Indian culture in real sense, are far behind in this race of advancement. In order to rescue them from the present plight, the university has put before itself the following aims and objectives-

To provide avenues of education, especially higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population of India. src="images_css/bullet.png"

To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, tradition, culture, language, medicinal systems, customs, forest based economic activities, flora, fauna and advancement in technologies relating to the natural resources of the tribal areas.

To collaborate with national and international universities and organizations, especially for undertaking cultural studies and research on tribal communities.

To formulate tribal centric development models, publish reports and monographs and to organize conferences and seminars on issues relating to tribes and to provide inputs to policy matters in different spheres.

To take appropriate measures for promoting the members of tribal communities capable of managing, administering and looking after their own needs by access to higher education through a university of their own.

To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such other branches of learning as it may deem fit.

To take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching learning process in inter-disciplinary studies and researches and to pay special attention to the improvement of social, educational and economic conditions and welfare of the scheduled tribes within the Union of India.

In view of the aims and objectives of the university the major thrust will be on providing more opportunity for the tribes. However, the university is open to all

Greetings from Amarkantak- known for the origin of three holy rivers- the Narmada, the Sone& the Johila, typical herbal medicinal plants and practices, rich tribal culture & heritage, salubrious climate and predominantly peace-loving tribal people. New Years’ Greetings and Wishes to my dearest colleagues, scholars, students and others. Let this New Year-2015 bring happiness, prosperity and peace to you and your family- that is my pray to Almighty. I am delighted to be an integral part of this University as the Vice-Chancellor to serve you as its Chief Servitor. All of you have overwhelmingly and passionately supported me in all endeavours- mass plantation, clean campus (Swatch Bharat) and community extension programmes.

All these flagship activities are near to my heart influencing my mind to think differently for this University. This University is blessed with all potential attributes to become a University Potential for Excellence through its consistent quality in teaching, research, governance and community contact progrmames. Our University has matched many steps ahead as compared to its contemporary central universities in academic collaboration with overseas universities, Indian universities and national institutions. Our University has adopted nearby tribal villages to study their socio-economic, cultural and ecological issues plaguing their progresses and acted a responsible partner and well-wisher of those villages as a part of Social Responsibility. Our university will play a lead role in projecting gifted great heritage of Amarkantak for which heritage walk will be conducted to showcase hidden treasures such as ayursala, herbal gardens, shrines, scenic and tribal culture.

Many ticklish questions tickle my mind and do not allow me to sleep. Can we position this University globally with our core strength i.e. research on tribal culture and heritage? I firmly believe in our own strength and vision to realize the dream of empowering tribal students through quality training for enhancement of employable knowledge and skills. It is true that days are not far to achieve.

We are lucky to have patronization of the Central Government to make our impossible dreams possible through our love, respect and loyalty to this mother institution. Your hard work with commitment, creative mind with fire and thinking with dreams can only make difference to this University.

The University Library is now fully functional spreading over 15 thousands sq. ft. carpeted area in the New Academic Block with 24x7 working hours to facilitate the optimum use. All the Departments belonging to the Faculty of Science with the state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, faculty rooms, cafeteria and 300-sitting capacity auditorium are now operating in the New Academic Block. The Faculty of Commerce & Management will soon get a hi-tech and iconic independent building. The University Administration will soon move to an ultramodern building with a unique attraction of Tribal Museum, making us proud in scaling greater heights in a spell of seven years.

My long-cherished dream is to provide residential facilities and amenities to faculty, staff, scholars and students. This will give them a peace of mind to study and work for optimization of university’s achievements. Two sports complexes are expected to be ready by the end of this current year with provision of indoor and outdoor games. One nursing college and two community colleges are expected to be approved for our university to meet the needs of paramedical services and school drop-outs to get a meaningful life to begin with.
I am as much committed for the main campus as serious and concern for the Regional Campus in Imphal, Manipur to get a concrete shape. The permanent buildings located at Makhan Village are ready to be used soon. The University has submitted proposal to the UGC for approval for offering almost more than a dozen new prorgammes including Master of Business Administration from the forthcoming academic yearat the main campus and regional campus.
Your greetings and good words to me on successful completion of one year at this National University have enthused me with positivity and energy to think incessantly more for the students to leave the campus with flying colours- job offers through on-campus and off-campus placements through the Industry-Academia Interface. Almighty has bestowed on us much responsibility to work ceaselessly for the underprivileged and unfortunate students with their humble backgrounds. Students need spark and ignition to shine and prosper. This can only be possible with your committed efforts to help students come out from inhibitions to excel in studies, leading to fetch them lucrative jobs. Teachers can only transform and shape students with their stimulating words. A cash prize worth of Rs.1 lakh will be given away to one faculty from Faculty of Science for outstanding research work as a mark of respect to the urge of the Hon’ble President of India for his campaign for innovation in India.
I am very much moderate in my speed given the constraints, but I am unstoppable in my thinking to ensure the speed of progress uninterrupted. A University is built over centuries and all the big universities have developed world-class infrastructure and superstructure over the years. This seven-year old National University is blessed with all virtues to become a Center of Learning globally.
I have a strong conviction that our University must be unique in its own way of getting connected with societies and rest of the world through innovations. I place in record with profound thanks to one and all for cooperation and hard work for having achieved many milestones in the last one year and will be achieved many more in the future. Jai Hind
