The University was formally inaugurated on March 20, 1965 by Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Another significant milestone was the inauguration of the building programme of the University by Late Smt Indira Gandhi, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on June 23, 1966.

Assam University (AU) was established in 1994 and it came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 (Act. No. XIII).

Dibrugarh University (DU) was established in 1965 under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Guwahati University (GU) was established in 1948 under the Guwahati University Act 1947.

Jai Prakash University was established with the aim of providing educational programs at Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels. Since its inception, the university has made significant contribution to the academic sector of Bihar in Chapra region. The University is also the member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
