At the instance of His Excellency the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir State, who is also the Chancellor of the Universities of Jammu and Kashmir, the office of the Coordinator Post-Graduate Programme of Kashmir University was setup during 1991-92 at the University of Jammu for running the Post-Graduate Programme of Kashmir University for migrant students.On recommendations of the Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu, His Excellency was kind enough to authorize admission of migrant students to M.A., M.Sc., M.Com. including LL.B. and B.Lib.courses.

The University of Jammu was established in 1969 under an Act of Jammu & Kashmir Act 1969 and is at present located on the banks of Tawi River in Jammu. The university has been accredited as 'A' Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India. The university of Jammu is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognised by UGC. JU is the first in India to be given ISO-9001 certification.
